How does Second Growth respond to JIA Curated 2026 theme, "Nature Weave"?
Created by Kaltimber and designed by Alexis Dornier, the pavilion embraces the existing conditions of the site rather than reshaping them. Trees, shadows, vegetation, rocks, and natural irregularities are allowed to guide the intervention, transforming the structure into a light framework woven around the landscape instead of imposed upon it.
Architecture here is treated as something temporary, permeable, and in constant dialogue with its surroundings. Suspended planes of reclaimed timber drift through the site, extending beyond conventional boundaries to create an open spatial composition shaped as much by nature as by design itself.
The pavilion also reflects the wider Kaltimber ecosystem through the presence of sister companies working with reclaimed materials across different scales and applications. Kitaru extends the life of reclaimed teak, Naturanexa focuses on reclaimed ironwood building components, while I-Rewood transforms production offcuts into new material possibilities — reinforcing a shared philosophy where existing resources are continuously reimagined rather than discarded.

In collaboration with Eco Mantra, the pavilion further reflects on the environmental impact of construction through a lifecycle carbon study comparing reclaimed materials with conventional building methods, revealing how material choices can shape not only spaces, but ecological futures.This cycle continues through Replant World, Kaltimber’s CSR partner dedicated to replanting ironwood seedlings and supporting long-term regeneration. Their presence within the pavilion reinforces the idea that architecture, material stewardship, and restoration are deeply interconnected.Rather than presenting nature as a backdrop to architecture, the pavilion proposes a quieter relationship between the two — one where material, landscape, craftsmanship, and regeneration remain interwoven within the same living system.
